When I started my teaching experience, my mentor and I had a discussion and it was suggested that I use the current social project that is done as an extra mural. This would ensure that the project continues and guarantees success. The school has an extra mural activity known as the enviro club. The purpose and focus of the enviro club is to teach learners about our environment, growing your own vegetables at home and giving back where possible. The enviro club had already made a decision to create a sustainable vegetable garden. The project was successful as it is carried during school hours.
The challenges that we faced was mostly the weather, when it rained it meant that the meeting was held indoors and the learners did not get an opportunity to check the progress. The project has taught me the benefits of growing your own vegetable garden and how it is possible to still give back to the community. Growing my own vegetables could feed my family and whatever is not used can be given away. The project helped me to see that I could give back to the community for example from the time that I start sowing the seeds, I can also have a separate vegetable with the intent of giving everything that has grown to a family in need.
This project will succeed as it is carried out throughout the school term. The project will also be beneficial in September during Arbor week. The initiative can be used to drive the importance of keeping the environment clean and how to nurture the vegetables to ensure growth.
